A warning as you play the video above – don’t be surprised if it’s a bit of a tearjerker!
Fifteen year old Kelvin from Sierra Leone didn’t grow up with much. In the area he lives, electricity is a rare occurrence, and opportunities of all kinds are extremely limited.
However, this did not deter him from devoting himself to attempting to make his community a better place. After gathering materials from the trash and experimenting with them, he was able to create a battery and generator to provide electricity to his family, as well as an FM transistor radio. Under the name “DJ Focus,” he broadcasts news and music to his community in hopes of fostering education and debate about issues. He is literally creating light in unexpected, dark places.
His next aspiration is to build a windmill and provide consistent electricity for his whole town. We don’t doubt his determination or genius in terms of finishing the project, and can’t wait to see what he does next! We wouldn’t be surprised to see a Nobel Prize in his future. The combination of a big brain and a bigger heart seems pretty unstoppable.
Can you imagine if more of today’s youth were committed to invention for the greater good? It makes us wonder, what can each of us do to foster a mindset of desire to contribute to community development…what talents do we have to give…? So inspiring to think about.
